Your holiday is going well, the weather is perfect and you do not want to leave. Or your flight has been cancelled and your visa is about to expire. Either way, one question matters: can you extend your Dubai visa, and what happens if you stay too long? This guide explains how extensions work for South Africans, which visas can and cannot be extended, how overstay fines work, and what to do if you are already running out of time.
Want the full picture? Our complete Dubai visa guide for South Africans covers every UAE visa type, price and document in one place.
Quick answer
- Some visas can be extended, others cannot. The 14-day visa on arrival can be extended once. The 60-day visa on arrival is a single stay and cannot be extended.
- Transit visas are not designed for extension. If you want to stay longer, apply for a tourist visa before you travel.
- Overstaying brings daily fines and can complicate future entry to the UAE.
- Never wait until the last day. Start the extension process well before your visa expires, and always use official channels.
- Fees and rules change. Confirm current amounts with the ICP or GDRFA before you pay or decide.
Which UAE visas can be extended?
Whether you can extend depends on the visa you hold and how you got it.
14-day visa on arrival
Since 25 June 2026, eligible South Africans who hold a qualifying residence permit can get a 14-day visa on arrival. Regional reporting says this visa can be extended once while you are in the UAE. Read our guide on the Dubai visa on arrival for South Africans to see who qualifies.
60-day visa on arrival
The 60-day visa on arrival is a single stay and cannot be extended. You must leave on or before the expiry date, so plan your departure carefully.
Tourist e-visas (14, 30 and 60 days)
Extension options for tourist e-visas depend on the visa type and current UAE rules, and they are subject to approval and fees. Ask your visa provider or check with the authorities before your visa expires, rather than assuming an extension is automatic.
48-hour and 96-hour transit visas
Transit visas are short, single-entry permits for people with a confirmed onward ticket. They are not designed for extension. If you think you may want a longer stay, choose a tourist visa from the start. See our guide on the Dubai transit visa for South Africans for the details.
How to extend your visa: step by step
The exact steps depend on your visa type and emirate, but the general process looks like this:
- Check your exact expiry date and visa type on your visa document or through official channels.
- Confirm that your visa can be extended. Ask your provider, or check ICP Smart Services or GDRFA Dubai.
- Gather your documents: passport, current visa, a recent photo and your return ticket details.
- Apply through an official channel such as ICP Smart Services or GDRFA Dubai, or through a licensed typing or visa service centre.
- Pay the fees and keep your receipt and application number.
- Wait for approval and download or print your new visa.
- Update your flights to match the new expiry date.
Start at least 5 to 7 days before your visa expires. Extensions are subject to approval, and rushing at the last minute is risky.
What happens if you overstay?
Overstaying means remaining in the UAE after your visa has expired. The main consequences are:
- Daily fines. A fine is normally charged for each day you stay past your visa end date. Amounts and any grace periods can change, so check the current figures with the ICP or GDRFA.
- Payment at the airport. Fines usually have to be settled before you can leave, and they can be added to your departure costs.
- Entry problems later. A record of overstay can cause your next UAE visa application to be refused, or lead to questions at immigration. Our guide on the 10 common reasons for Dubai visa rejection explains how past overstays affect new applications.
- Possible legal action. Long overstays can lead to detention, deportation or an entry ban in serious cases.
The simplest way to avoid all of this is to leave on time or extend before expiry.
What if your flight is delayed or cancelled?
Genuine travel disruptions happen. If your flight is cancelled or delayed and your visa is about to expire:
- Contact your airline immediately and ask for a written record of the cancellation or delay.
- Rebook the earliest available flight, and keep all receipts and messages.
- Contact a licensed visa provider or the relevant UAE authority straight away to ask about a short extension or a grace arrangement.
- Carry proof such as the airline's notice and your new booking, in case an officer asks questions.
- Do not simply stay and hope. Acting early shows good faith and gives you more options.
What if you are ill or have an emergency?
If you are in hospital, unwell or facing an emergency that stops you leaving, keep medical documents and contact the relevant authority or a licensed provider as early as possible. Do not wait until after your visa has expired.
Extension vs applying for a new visa
Sometimes a new visa is a better option than an extension, and sometimes it is the only option.
- Extend if your visa type allows it, you only need a few more days and you want to stay in the UAE.
- Leave and re-enter on a new visa if your visa cannot be extended, for example the 60-day visa on arrival, and you meet the requirements for a new one. Check eligibility and processing times first, and do not rely on re-entry without a valid visa.
- Plan the right visa from the start. If you know you want 30 or 60 days, apply for that length at the beginning. Our guide on the cost of a Dubai visa from South Africa helps you compare options and totals.
Travelling with children or family
Every traveller has their own visa and their own expiry date. If you extend, make sure each family member's visa is dealt with, and check that the dates match your flight tickets. For more on family travel, read our guide on travelling to Dubai with children from South Africa.
