Quick answer: do South Africans need a visa for Dubai?

Yes, most do. A South African passport does not give visa-free entry to the UAE. The simplest route is to get an approved UAE visa online before you fly: 48/96-hour transit, or 14, 30 or 60-day tourist visas, with single or multiple entry on longer stays. The only visa on arrival for South Africans is the conditional scheme launched on 25 June 2026, which requires a valid residence permit from the US, an EU country, the UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada. You can apply for a Dubai visa from South Africa on our secure page in under two minutes.

Key facts: Dubai visa for South African passport holders (2026)

Do South Africans need a visa for Dubai?

South Africa is not on the UAE's list of visa-free nationalities. Citizens of many countries can walk into Dubai on a free 30, 90 or 180-day entry stamp, but South African ordinary passport holders must secure an entry permit first. In practice that means one of three routes:

  1. Apply online through a licensed UAE visa provider. This is what most South African travellers do. It is quick, fully digital and does not require a trip to Pretoria. Start on our South Africa UAE visa page.
  2. Apply through an airline or travel agent. Emirates and some agents can sponsor visas, usually at a higher service fee and with less flexibility.
  3. Visa on arrival (conditional). Available only to South Africans who also hold a valid residence permit from an approved country (see the next section).

This rule applies whether you are flying to Dubai for a holiday, a business trip, a family visit or a connection through Abu Dhabi, and whether you are travelling from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or elsewhere in South Africa.

Important update: older guides still say South Africans can never get a visa on arrival. That changed on 25 June 2026 for a specific group of South Africans (below). Always check the date on any visa article you read.

The 25 June 2026 visa-on-arrival rule for South Africans, explained

On 25 June 2026 the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) expanded its visa-on-arrival programme. According to the official WAM announcement and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ordinary-passport nationals of South Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Kenya, together with their accompanying family members, can obtain a 14-day or 60-day visa on arrival provided they hold a valid residence permit issued by one of these nine places:

  • United States
  • European Union member states
  • United Kingdom
  • Singapore
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Canada

What it costs and what you can do with it

  • Reported total issuance fees: AED 100 (14-day) and AED 250 (60-day), as published in regional coverage of the ICP statement.
  • The 14-day visa can be extended once while you are in the UAE; the 60-day visa is a single stay and cannot be extended, and holders must leave on expiry.
  • See the Khaleej Times report for the ICP's own wording.

Who this does not help

If you live in South Africa and do not hold a residence permit from the countries above, this scheme does not apply to you. A South African passport alone does not qualify. You need to apply for a UAE visa online before you fly, which is exactly what our Dubai visa from South Africa service is designed for.

Practical advice if you think you qualify

  • Carry your South African passport and your original residence permit, ideally with at least 6 months' remaining validity.
  • Family members travelling with you must meet the same conditions.
  • Airlines can refuse boarding if they are unsure of the rule, so print the official announcement and consider applying for a pre-approved e-visa to avoid delays at check-in.

UAE visa types and prices for South Africans (2026)

These are the visa options for South African nationals on the Dubai visa from South Africa page. Prices are in USD and include taxes and mandatory medical cover facilitation as stated at checkout.

Dubai transit visa for South Africans (48 and 96 hours)

If your flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town connects through Dubai or Abu Dhabi on the way to Asia, Europe or the Americas, and you want to leave the airport for a day or two, a Dubai transit visa gives you time to see Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, the Gold Souk and the Marina without committing to a full holiday.

14-day Dubai tourist visa

Ideal for a long weekend plus a week of sightseeing, a conference or a quick family visit.

30-day Dubai tourist visa

The classic holiday visa. It covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and the rest of the UAE, with enough breathing room for a leisurely itinerary. It also comes with free extension preparation guidance.

60-day Dubai tourist visa

Best for extended family stays, remote workers on a long break (not for employment), and travellers who want to explore the UAE at a slow pace.

Multiple-entry UAE visa

Choose this if you plan to pop over to Oman, Bahrain or Qatar and return, or travel frequently for meetings.

Which UAE visa should you choose?

Not sure? Use the visa finder on our South Africa visa page to get an instant recommendation, or message the visa desk on WhatsApp.

Documents South Africans need for a UAE visa

  • Passport copy: clear colour scan of the data page, valid for at least 6 months from arrival. No cropped edges, glare or fingers over the text.
  • Passport photo: recent, white background, face centred, no filters, glasses glare or head coverings that hide the face (religious head coverings are fine when the face is visible).
  • Flight details: confirmed booking or itinerary showing arrival and departure dates.
  • Accommodation: hotel reservation, rental confirmation or host address in the UAE.
  • For minors: the child's own passport and photo. Parents travelling alone with children should also carry the documents South Africa requires for minors (see DIRCO and Home Affairs guidance).
  • For residence-permit holders: a copy of your valid permit if you are in the conditional visa-on-arrival group.

You do not need to post your passport, queue at an embassy, or print forms. Our in-house PRO team audits every upload within 15 minutes, or you can request a free document check first.

How to apply for a Dubai visa from South Africa: step by step

  1. Check your passport. Confirm 6+ months' validity and at least two blank pages.
  2. Pick your visa. Go to the Dubai visa from South Africa page, choose your duration and entry type, and add Express if you travel within 24 hours.
  3. Upload your documents. Use a phone camera in good light, flat on a dark surface for the passport scan.
  4. Pay securely. Checkout uses 256-bit encryption. Review the terms and refund policy.
  5. We lodge the application. Licensed PRO experts submit your file to the UAE immigration system for approval.
  6. Receive your e-visa. The approved PDF arrives by email and WhatsApp. Use the visa tracker for live status.
  7. Verify and print. Check the permit on ICP smart services or GDRFA, then print a copy for the airport.
  8. Fly. Show the visa at check-in and passport control in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Online vs embassy vs airline: how the options compare

How long does the UAE visa take, and when should you apply?

  • Standard: 24 to 48 hours in normal conditions, up to 72 working hours at peak.
  • Express: 12 to 24 hours for an extra USD 100.
  • Best time to apply: 5 to 7 days before departure; 10 days or more in peak travel windows (December-January, Easter, school holidays and major events such as Dubai Shopping Festival).
  • Earliest you should apply: a visa has a validity window for entering the UAE, so do not apply many months ahead of your trip. Confirm the entry deadline stated on your approval.
  • Weekends and UAE holidays: government offices slow down on public holidays such as Eid, so build in a buffer.

Booking a last-minute trip? Our express UAE visa for South Africans option is built for it.

Why UAE visas get rejected for South African applicants (and how to avoid it)

Over 80% of delays we see come from document quality, not eligibility. Avoid these:

  • Blurry or glare-covered passport photos. Retake in daylight.
  • Passport expiring within 6 months. Renew first.
  • Non-white or shadowed portrait background.
  • Name mismatches between passport, flight booking and application.
  • Previous UAE overstay or unresolved fines.
  • Missing accommodation or flight proof.
  • Applying for the wrong visa type (for instance a single-entry visa when you plan to re-enter).

If something goes wrong, our team will tell you what to fix. See the refund and cancellation policy for what applies to your case.

Extension, overstay and visa rules for visitors

Can you extend a Dubai tourist visa?

Usually yes, for tourist visas issued through standard channels, subject to approval and fee. Apply before your permit expires through the ICP portal or GDRFA, or ask our visa desk to help with extension preparation. Our stay and overstay rules page lists the practical details.

Overstay penalties

Overstaying results in daily fines, potential detention and, in some cases, an entry ban. Fine amounts are set by the authorities and can change, so always check the current figure on the ICP website.

Rules every visitor should know

  • No working on a tourist visa. It is illegal.
  • Carry ID. Keep your passport or a certified copy with you.
  • Respect local laws. Public intoxication, drugs (including some prescription medicines), photographing people without permission and offensive behaviour online can lead to serious penalties.
  • Dress modestly in malls, mosques and public places; beachwear is for beaches and pools.
  • Ramadan etiquette. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during fasting hours.

Arriving in Dubai from South Africa: airport checklist

Most South African travellers land at Dubai International Airport (DXB), reachable from OR Tambo, Johannesburg and Cape Town International. Some itineraries use Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport. See DXB on Google Maps.

  • Printed e-visa and digital copy
  • Passport valid 6+ months, with blank pages
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Hotel booking or host's address and phone number
  • Travel insurance and some proof of funds (card or cash)
  • Residence permit original (if you are using the conditional visa on arrival)
  • Medication in original packaging with prescriptions

At immigration, officers may ask about your purpose of visit and where you will stay. Answer clearly, and keep your accommodation details handy. Once cleared, your entry is recorded electronically against your passport.

Travel tips for South African visitors to Dubai

  • Flight time: about 8 to 9 hours direct from Johannesburg. Dubai is 2 hours ahead of SAST.
  • Best season: November to March for mild weather; June to September is very hot but cheaper.
  • Money: the dirham (AED) is pegged to the US dollar. Cards are widely accepted; exchange cash at licensed money exchangers rather than the airport if you can.
  • Getting around: Dubai Metro, taxis and ride-hailing are inexpensive and convenient.
  • Connectivity: eSIMs and tourist SIM cards are available on arrival; check roaming rates with your South African network.
  • Health: carry insurance and check guidance from the NICD and the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention.
  • Plan activities: browse verified Dubai tours and excursions such as desert safaris, Burj Khalifa tickets and Abu Dhabi day trips.
  • Inspiration: the official Visit Dubai site lists events, attractions and safety information.
  • Plan beyond Dubai: your UAE visa works across Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and the other emirates.
  • Travelling with family? Our family UAE visa packages let you apply for everyone at once.

How we keep this guide accurate

Our visa desk reviews this page when the ICP, MoFA or the UAE Embassy publishes a policy change and re-checks prices and timelines regularly. FAQs: Dubai visa from South Africa and UAE visa for South Africans

Do South Africans need a visa for Dubai?

Yes, in almost all cases. South African ordinary passport holders need a UAE visa arranged before they fly. The only exception introduced on 25 June 2026 is a conditional visa on arrival for South African nationals (and accompanying family) who also hold a valid residence permit from the US, an EU member state, the UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada. Everyone else should get an approved e-visa first through a licensed provider such as Budget Travel & Tourism.

Can South Africans get a visa on arrival in Dubai?

Only if they hold a valid residence permit from one of the nine approved countries (US, EU member states, UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada). In that case the UAE's ICP says a 14-day or 60-day visa on arrival is available, with total issuance fees reported as AED 100 and AED 250 respectively. A South African passport on its own does not qualify, so most travellers must apply for a UAE visa online before departure.

How do I apply for a Dubai visa from South Africa online?

Choose your visa on the Dubai visa from South Africa page, upload a clear passport scan and a white-background photo, add your flight and accommodation details, pay at secure checkout, and receive your approved e-visa by email and WhatsApp. No embassy visit is needed. You can follow progress any time with the visa tracker.

How much does a Dubai visa cost for South Africans in 2026?

Budget Travel & Tourism lists 48-hour transit from USD 150, 96-hour transit from USD 175, 14-day from USD 200, 30-day single entry from USD 250, 60-day single entry from USD 350, 30-day multiple entry from USD 450 and 60-day multiple entry from USD 550. Express handling (12-24 hours) adds USD 100. Prices are shown in full on the application page. Government visa-on-arrival fees for eligible residents are separate and reported at AED 100 (14 days) and AED 250 (60 days).

How long does a UAE visa take for South African passport holders?

Standard processing is typically 24 to 48 hours, and express is 12 to 24 hours. Allow up to 72 working hours in busy periods or if documents need correcting, and apply 5 to 7 days before travel (10 days or more in peak season such as December-January and school holidays).

What documents do South Africans need for a Dubai visa?

A colour passport scan (data page) valid for at least 6 months, a recent passport-style photo on a white background, confirmed flight details or itinerary, and proof of accommodation such as a hotel booking or host address. Use our free document check before you pay.

How long must my South African passport be valid for the UAE?

At least 6 months from your date of arrival in the UAE, with space for entry stamps. If your passport expires within 6 months, renew it with the South African Department of Home Affairs before applying.

Can I apply at the UAE Embassy in Pretoria instead?

The UAE Embassy in Pretoria handles consular matters for South Africa, but most travellers now apply online through licensed agents and airlines because it is faster and requires no travel to Pretoria. Always check the embassy's latest announcements for any change in policy.

Which Dubai visa is best for me: 14, 30 or 60 days?

Choose 14 days for a short break or business trip, 30 days for most holidays and family visits (our most popular option), and 60 days for extended stays, long family visits or multi-city itineraries. If you plan to leave and re-enter the UAE (for example a side trip to Oman), pick a multiple-entry visa.

What is the difference between single-entry and multiple-entry UAE visas?

A single-entry visa lets you enter once; when you leave the UAE the permit ends, even if days remain. A multiple-entry visa lets you leave and re-enter during its validity, which suits Oman or Bahrain side trips and frequent business travel.

Do I need a visa for a layover in Dubai?

If you stay airside and continue on the same ticket, most airlines do not require a UAE visa, but airline rules differ, so confirm with your carrier. If you want to leave the airport on a long layover, apply for a 48-hour or 96-hour Dubai transit visa before you fly.

Can I extend my Dubai tourist visa?

Tourist visas can usually be extended from inside the UAE through ICP or GDRFA channels, subject to approval and a fee. Per the ICP, a 14-day visa on arrival can be extended once, while the 60-day visa on arrival is a single non-extendable stay. Read our stay and overstay rules.

What happens if I overstay my UAE visa?

Overstaying leads to daily fines, possible detention at the airport, and in some cases an entry ban. Fine amounts change, so check the ICP smart services portal for current figures and leave or extend before your permit expires.

Can I work in Dubai on a tourist visa?

No. Working on a visit or tourist visa is illegal in the UAE. A work visa, freelance permit or employment entry permit is required, and the 2-year freelance option is a separate product.

Do I need a return ticket and hotel booking?

Yes, travellers should carry proof of onward or return travel and proof of where they are staying (hotel booking or host address). Immigration officers may ask for them at DXB.

Do children and babies need their own UAE visa?

Yes. Every traveller, including infants, needs a visa linked to their own passport. Family packages let you apply for everyone in one go.

Does a Dubai visa work for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the rest of the UAE?

Yes. A UAE tourist visa covers all seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

Is Budget Travel & Tourism a licensed and legitimate visa provider?

Budget Travel & Tourism LLC operates under DTCM licence no. 1202281 and a Dubai Unified License that you can check on the Invest in Dubai verification page. Visas are issued through the UAE immigration channels and you can verify your permit on GDRFA or ICP smart services.

How can I verify that my UAE e-visa is real?

Enter your permit or passport details on the official ICP smart services portal or on GDRFA Dubai. If the system cannot find your permit, contact your provider immediately.

Why are UAE visas rejected for South African applicants?

The most common reasons are blurry or cropped passport scans, photos with shadows or non-white backgrounds, a passport that expires within 6 months, name mismatches between documents, a previous overstay, and incomplete accommodation or flight details. If a visa is refused, fix the cause and reapply, and review the refund policy for what applies to your case.

Do I need a printed copy of my e-visa?

Carry a printed copy and keep a digital copy on your phone. Airlines may check your visa at check-in at OR Tambo, Cape Town or Durban, and it is useful to present at immigration in Dubai.

I hold dual nationality. Which passport should I use?

Apply using the passport you will travel on and present at both airports. Do not switch passports between application and arrival.

Do I need any vaccinations to travel from South Africa to the UAE?

Entry health rules can change, so check the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention and your airline before departure. A yellow fever certificate is generally required only for travellers who have been in a yellow-fever-risk country, and the NICD offers travel-health guidance in South Africa.

How long is the flight from South Africa to Dubai and what is the time difference?

Direct flights from Johannesburg take roughly 8 to 9 hours. Dubai is on Gulf Standard Time (UTC+4), two hours ahead of South African Standard Time.

When is the best time for South Africans to visit Dubai?

November to March offers mild, sunny weather ideal for beaches and outdoor sightseeing. Summers (June to September) are very hot, with lower hotel prices and plenty of indoor attractions.

Can I bring my medication from South Africa to Dubai?

Carry medicines in original packaging with a doctor's prescription. Some medicines that are available over the counter in South Africa, including certain codeine-containing and sedative products, are controlled in the UAE and may require prior approval. Check the UAE Ministry of Health guidance before you travel.

What if the UAE rules change after I read this guide?

Visa policy can change quickly, as the 25 June 2026 visa-on-arrival update showed. We review this page whenever official announcements change, and you can confirm anything with the ICP, UAE MoFA or our visa desk on +971 56 2617646.
