Dubai Transit Visa for South Africans 2026: 48-Hour vs 96-Hour Visa, Requirements and How to Apply

South Africans who stay inside the Dubai airport transit area generally don’t need a UAE visa. Anyone who wants to leave the airport on a layover needs a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa, applied for online before flying. Requirements: a passport valid for 6+ months, a clear scan and photo, a confirmed onward ticket out of the UAE, and a hotel booking. Timing: the clock starts at arrival and the visa can’t normally be extended, so leave a buffer of a few hours before it expires. Alternatives: a tourist e-visa suits stays over 4 days. The visa on arrival only applies to South Africans with a qualifying residence permit. Risk: airline check-in staff may ask for your visa and onward ticket, so carry printed copies. CTA: apply online and get the approved visa by email and WhatsApp.

Many South Africans pass through Dubai on the way to Europe, Asia, the Americas or the rest of Africa. A long layover is a perfect chance to leave the airport, see the Burj Khalifa, walk the creek or eat a proper meal, but only if you hold the right visa. This guide explains the 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas, who needs one, what you must show, how to apply, and how to choose between a transit visa, a tourist visa and the new visa on arrival.

Quick answer: do South Africans need a visa for a Dubai layover?

  • Staying airside (inside the transit area): you generally do not need a UAE visa, as long as you do not pass through immigration and you hold a valid onward ticket and the documents for your final destination.
  • Leaving the airport: yes, you need a valid UAE visa. A 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa is designed for exactly this situation.
  • Staying longer than 96 hours: apply for a tourist visa instead (14, 30 or 60 days).

A South African passport on its own does not give you entry to Dubai. If you want to leave the airport, plan your visa before you fly.

48-hour vs 96-hour transit visa

Both visas are single-entry transit permits, not holiday visas. The clock normally starts when you enter the UAE, so build in a safety margin for your departure.

Pricing and airline offers: fees and conditions can change, and some airlines run their own transit arrangements for passengers on certain tickets. Check the current price on our application page and ask your airline what applies to your booking.

Who needs a transit visa?

You are a good fit for a transit visa if all of these are true:

  1. You are flying through Dubai to a third country, and Dubai is not your final destination.
  2. You hold a confirmed onward ticket leaving the UAE within 48 or 96 hours.
  3. You want to leave the airport and explore.
  4. You hold a valid South African passport and, where needed, the visa for your final destination.

If your trip starts and ends in Dubai, a transit visa is the wrong choice. Choose a tourist visa instead.

What you need to apply

Prepare the following before you start:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, with blank pages
  • Clear colour scan of the passport data page, with all four corners visible
  • Recent white-background photo, front-facing, no filters or sunglasses
  • Confirmed onward flight ticket out of the UAE within the visa period
  • Visa or entry permission for your final destination, if it requires one
  • Hotel booking or the address where you will stay
  • Travel insurance (recommended) and proof of funds in case you are asked

Missing or inconsistent documents are the top cause of delays. If your application is refused, read our guide on the 10 common reasons for Dubai visa rejection and how to fix them.

How to apply online, step by step

  1. Choose your visa: pick the 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa on our South Africa application page.
  2. Enter your details exactly as they appear in your passport.
  3. Upload your documents: passport scan, photo and your onward ticket.
  4. Pay securely and keep your receipt and application number.
  5. Receive your approved visa by email and WhatsApp, usually within 24 to 48 hours on standard service, or 12 to 24 hours on express.
  6. Print a copy and carry it with your passport, onward ticket and hotel booking.

Apply at least 5 to 7 days before you fly. Do not leave it until the night before, especially if your layover falls on a UAE public holiday or a weekend.

How the clock works: avoid overstaying

A transit visa is strict about time, and overstaying can bring daily fines and complications on future trips. A few practical rules:

  • Count from arrival, not from the date your visa was issued.
  • Leave a buffer of at least 3 to 4 hours before the visa expires, to allow for traffic, airport queues and check-in.
  • If your onward flight is delayed or cancelled, speak to your airline and a licensed visa provider immediately.
  • Do not work or take paid jobs on a transit visa. It is a visitor permit.

What can you do with 48 or 96 hours in Dubai?

A 48-hour layover

  • Day 1: Arrive, drop your bags, then visit Old Dubai: the Al Fahidi district, an abra ride across the creek, and the gold and spice souks.
  • Day 2: Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall in the morning, then the Dubai Fountain show in the evening before heading back to the airport.

A 96-hour layover

Add a desert safari, a day at the beach or Jumeirah, and a visit to the Dubai Marina and Palm area. You could also add a day trip to Abu Dhabi, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as the main stop.

A few tips for first-timers:

  • Book popular attractions ahead of time.
  • Dress modestly at mosques and traditional areas.
  • Use the Dubai Metro and taxis to keep costs down.
  • Keep your passport and visa copy with you at all times.

Transit visa vs tourist visa vs visa on arrival

Since 25 June 2026, South Africans who hold a valid residence permit from the US, an EU member state, the UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada may be able to get a visa on arrival. Most travellers do not hold one of these permits. Read our guide on the Dubai visa on arrival for South Africans to see who qualifies. If you are unsure, a transit visa applied for online is the safer route for a short stopover.

Airline and check-in rules for transit passengers

You meet your airline before you meet UAE immigration. At check-in in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, staff may ask to see:

  • Your approved UAE visa if you plan to leave the airport
  • Your onward ticket out of the UAE
  • The visa for your final destination, if one is needed
  • A hotel booking, if you will stay in Dubai

If your documents do not match, you risk being refused boarding. Carry printed copies of everything and keep digital copies on your phone.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a very tight connection and then trying to leave the airport. Allow enough time for immigration and the return journey.
  • No confirmed onward ticket. An open or unconfirmed ticket can cause refusal.
  • Name mismatches between the passport, ticket and visa application.
  • Passport under 6 months' validity.
  • Applying too late. Give yourself at least a week.
  • Staying past the visa limit. Leave a clear buffer.
  • Forgetting the visa for your final destination.

Frequently asked questions

Do South Africans need a visa to transit through Dubai?

If you stay inside the airport transit area and continue on your onward flight, a visa is generally not needed. If you want to leave the airport, you need a valid UAE visa such as a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa.

What is the difference between the 48-hour and 96-hour transit visa?

The 48-hour visa allows up to two days in the UAE, and the 96-hour visa allows up to four days. Both are single-entry transit permits for passengers with a confirmed onward ticket.

Can I extend a transit visa?

Transit visas are not designed for extension. If you want to stay longer, apply for a tourist visa before you travel.

Do I need a hotel booking for a transit visa?

A hotel booking or host address is strongly recommended, and officers may ask for it. Carry it with you.

Can I get a transit visa if my onward ticket is not confirmed?

No. A confirmed onward ticket out of the UAE within the visa period is normally required.

How long does a transit visa take to process?

Standard processing is typically 24 to 48 hours, and express is 12 to 24 hours. Official timings can vary, so apply early.

Can I leave Dubai and come back during a transit visa?

Transit visas are generally single entry. Plan to enter once and depart on your onward flight.

Is a transit visa cheaper than a tourist visa?

It can be, depending on the current fees and any airline offers. Check the latest price on the application page before you decide.

Can I get a visa on arrival instead of a transit visa?

Only if you hold a qualifying residence permit from one of the nine approved places. A South African passport alone does not qualify.

What if my flight is delayed and my visa is about to expire?

Contact your airline straight away and speak to a licensed visa provider or the relevant UAE authority. Do not simply stay past the visa limit.
